Happy International Women’s Day





Each year International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 all over the world. Here in Jamaica we have a gallery of strong and influential women who have contributed to the building of our country. So let us salute them on the day. Here is just a few I can remember :


1.       Honourable Portia Simpson Miller- Prime Minister of Jamaica

2.       Lisa Hanna-Miss World 1993, Minister of  Youth and Culture, MP-Saint Ann South East
3.       Jevene Bent- Caribbean's first female deputy commissioner of police.

4.       Paula Kerr-Jarrett, Attorney-at-Law, Philanthropist, Political Contender for Eastern Hanover Constituency

5.       Dr. Blossom O'Meally-Nelson, Jamaica's first female, Post Master General.

6.       Lady Saw, born Marion Hall- Jamaican Reggae Artist, Dance Hall Queen and Grammy Winner.

7.       Maxine Henry-Wilson former Minister of Education

8.       Aloun Assamba-former Minister of Tourism & Industry

9.       Marlene Patricia Malahoo Forte -Senator and State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade

10.   Veronica Campbell-Brown- World Champion 200m, silver 100m, silver 4x100m relay

11.   Dr Marlene Hamilton - first female Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of the West Indies

12.   Paula Llewellyn - first woman to be appointed Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
Ruby Martin- a founding member of the Ward Theatre Foundation
